"No One Cries Out...", directed by Kazimierz Kutz, is the fourth film to be seen at Światowid Cinema as part of the Short History of Polish Cinema series. The screening will take place on Thursday 18 May at 6 pm.
One of the most visually beautiful Polish films. The stylised black-and-white cinematography captures the state of soul of a couple of young people completely lost in the new reality and the moonscape of a town populated by random inhabitants.
One of the protagonists is Bożek, who arrives in Zielno after the war with other displaced persons. His journey arose from his desire to break with the underground and escape punishment for disobeying an order. "I didn't kill a Red," he says to himself. Bożek arranges a room for himself and takes a job at a winery.
He begins to have feelings for Lucyna, whom he meets here, but the fear of being sentenced precludes any sincerity. The boy struggles with himself, trying to cool his love for Lucyna with fleeting relationships with Niura and Olga. One day in town, he spots Zygmunt, a colleague from the organisation, which provokes Bożyk's escape to the countryside. But after rethinking his situation, he takes the risk of returning to Lucyna.
The "Short History of Polish Cinema" series consists of 10 films with introductions in the form of a video lecture, which presents the silhouette of the filmmaker/creator, introduces the subject of the work, and brings closer the political and social realities of its creation. Each introduction also includes a formal analysis of the work with an emphasis on the script, cinematography, acting, editing, set and costume design. It also indicates the current dimension of the work and suggests possible interpretative tropes. The prologues are produced in an accessible, more popularising than academic manner, setting the individual films in a broad, cultural studies context.
List of other titles presented in the series: "Bad Luck", "The Hourglass Sanatorium", "Camouflage", "Aria for an Athlete", "Fever", and "Blind Case".
