DKF: "Holy Spider" directed by Ali Abbasi

The A. Munk Film Discussion Club invites you to a fact-based thriller in the vein of David Fincher's films and, at the same time, an uncompromising picture of contemporary Iran. The screening of "Holy Spider", directed by Ali Abbasi, will take place on Thursday (13 April) at 7 p.m. in Światowid Cinema.

Although the film is set in Iran, this dark thriller consciously references prominent American classics of the genre, such as Scorsese's Taxi Driver and Fincher's Zodiac. As gloomy and dense as a steamy city night, Abbasi's film premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, from where Zar Amir Ebrahimi left with the award for best actress.

"Holy Spider" is a masterful true crime about a woman who risks her life to find out the truth, challenging patriarchal collusion. Ebrahimi plays a journalist tracking down a serial killer of female sex workers in the holy Iranian city of Mashhad (the crimes in Meshhed actually happened - sixteen women were killed). Religious leaders, the police and the media do not hide their silent admiration for the fanatic who "cleans" the streets of corruption and sin. Thus, the heroine is up against not only a murderer but also predators in uniform and in office for whom women's lives - including her own - have no value. The world of the "Holy Spider" is like a sticky web set upon them.
