About journalists and Elbląg journalism on the big screen

Before Easter, we would like to invite you to the Światowid Cinema for a screening of the series "Elbląg on the big screen". The subject of the meeting will be Elbląg media and the journalists working in them.

Until 1990, Elbląg was dominated by newspapers from the Tricity: Dziennik Bałtycki, Głos Wybrzeża (with a local mutation Głos Elbląga) and Wieczór Wybrzeża. The only local title was the "Wiadomości Elbląskie" - The last issue (518) was published on 31 January 1990. The situation changed after the Roundtable discussions when censorship was lifted. Many local titles started to be published then, but they did not have a long life. These were: Elbląska Gazeta Obywatelska "EGO", "Tygodnik Elbląski", "Elbląski Magazyn Ilustrowany", "Kurier Elbląski", the weekly " Wiadomości", "Echo Elbląga", or "Tygodnik Elbląski". The previously mentioned Tricity titles continued to reach Elblag, but new ones also appeared: "Gazeta Gdańska" and "Gazeta Morska" - a regional supplement to "Gazeta Wyborcza". Since 1999, "Gazeta w Elblągu" was published for two years; the colour magazine "Tydzień w Elblągu" was published for 10 years. There was also "Moje Liceum", addressed to students; "Elblążanka", addressed to women; "Razem z Tobą", addressed to disabled people; "Pozarządowiec", addressed to social organisations; "Regiony", "Centrum" and "Jednak Centrum", addressed to supporters of the right; and "Tygiel", the cultural quarterly, which has been published for the longest time. The decline of the printed press was marked by free newspapers, such as "Extra Elbląg" or "Elblog", and newspapers and bulletins published on the occasion of important events or elections. The place of the printed press in the 21st century has been taken by Internet portals, the number and titles of which are constantly changing.

Since 1992, the local radio station "Radio EL" has been operating for 10 years. It was here that many journalists and later cultural animators took their first steps. In 1994 the private TV station "Vectra-El" (since 2000 under the name "Telewizja Elbląska" and since 2017 "Truso.TV") started broadcasting. There was also the Catholic "Radio Bis", broadcasting for only a year.

The known and unknown history of Elbląg's media will be interwoven with anecdotes and illustrated with film footage. We invite you to the screening on Wednesday, 5 April at 6 p.m. at Światowid Cinema.

The organisers of the "Elbląg on the big screen" series are the "Światowid" European Meeting Centre in Elbląg and the Truso.Tv television station, partners are Elbląskie Towarzystwo Kulturalne (Elbląg Cultural Association), Polskie Towarzystwo Historyczne o. w Elblągu (Polish Historical Association unit in Elbląg) and stowarzyszenie Polskie Telewizje Lokalne i Regionalne w Elblągu (the Association of Polish Local and Regional Television in Elbląg).
